About DTCError

DTCError is a free reference for OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). For each code we explain what it means, the common causes, the symptoms you may notice and whether it is safe to keep driving — in plain English and Italian.

How we compile the information

Generic powertrain codes (the standardised P0, and the U, B and C ranges) are based on the SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 definitions that every OBD-II compliant vehicle sold since 1996 must follow. We then enrich the most-searched codes with curated descriptions, likely causes, symptoms and drivability guidance compiled from manufacturer service information, established automotive repair references and our own review.

Sources

Standardised code titles follow the SAE J2012 generic DTC list. Causes, symptoms and repair context are cross-checked against publicly documented manufacturer service procedures and widely used industry references. Manufacturer-specific meanings are clearly labelled as such, because the same code can mean different things across brands.

Accuracy and updates

We expand and revise the catalogue continually, prioritising the codes drivers look up most. Every code page links to related codes and lets registered users share real-world experiences for a specific make, model and year.

Important disclaimer

This information is provided for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional diagnosis. A trouble code points to a system, not a guaranteed faulty part — always confirm with proper testing before replacing components. For safety-critical faults, consult a qualified mechanic.
